Air Pacific to Christmas Island
Air Pacific's weekly flights between Hawaii and Fiji now stop on Christmas Island in the Republic of Kiribati. In 1962, the United States conducted 40 nuclear tests over Christmas Island, before the Partial Test Ban Treaty of 1963 brought an end to these activities (the British had also conducted nuclear tests over Christmas Island in the 1950s). Because the explosions occurred high in the atmosphere, no measurable radioactivity remains at ground level. Today, Christmas Island is worth visiting to see the huge seabird colonies, especially during the breeding seasons from March to July and October to December. The island is also one of the best places in the world for Pacific bonefish fly fishing, and there's excellent scuba diving.
