Ramada Plaza Noumea Hotel Opens

Ramada Plaza NoumeaIn October, the 188-room Ramada Plaza Noumea opened in New Caledonia's capital city. This four-star hotel is next to the 15-story Hotel Isle de France, a block back from Anse Vata Beach.

But while the Isle de France is a residential hotel with a minimum one-month stay, the Ramada Plaza caters to Japanese, Australian, American, and French packaged tourists. Air-conditioned rooms on the Ramada Plaza's lower floors begin at CFP 16,900 (about US$169) single or double including tax, and climb to CFP 70,900 for the presidential suite (up to eight persons). Rooms with kitchenette begin at CFP 25,900 (from CFP 36,900 for a deluxe suite with lagoon view). Half board is CFP 5,800 per person extra.

The Ramada Plaza's swimming pool is surrounded by white sands. Other facilies include a business center, conference rooms, spa, and wheelchair accessibility. The 18th floor of this circular tower features a revolving restaurant.

All of this is fine if you're in the market for an upscale vacation in a French milieu, and tour operators in Australia and New Zealand are currently offering discounted opening specials. But hopefully your holiday won't end there, for to discover the real New Caledonia you must visit the east coast of the main island, Grand Terre, and travel to one of the enticing outer islands, Ouvea, Lifou, Mare, and the Isle of Pines.
