South Pacific Express between the Samoas

This week, a new American Samoa-based airline, South Pacific Express, began flying between Pago Pago International Airport on Tutuila and Faleolo International Airport on Upolu. SPEX joins Inter Island Airways and Polynesian Airlines on this route, restoring the choice of carriers travelers lost with the bankrupcy of Samoa Air in 2003. Last year, Fagali'i Airport near Apia was closed, so everyone must use Faleolo Airport, 35 kilometers west of Samoa's capital.

Looking ahead, it's to be hoped that either South Pacific Express or Inter Island Airways will reestablish the Pago Pago to Vavau, Tonga, route which Samoa Air once operated. Polynesian Airlines already has flights from Faleolo to both Vavau and Nukualofa, and triangular American Samoa, Tonga, Samoa routings would have a lot to offer travelers.

UPDATE: Inter-Island Air now operates this service.
