Yau Kolo Campground, Vanua Levu

Since July 2004, the Yau Kolo Beer Garden Campground has been a stopping point on the Backpacker Trail around Fiji's "Friendly North." It's right on the Hibiscus Highway, 13 kilometers west of Savusavu and only 500 meters west of the upscale Koro Sun Resort.

Yau Kolo CampgroundCampers pay F$20/30 single/double including continental breakfast to sleep in one of Yau Kolo's two spacious furnished tents, or only F$12 per person to unroll their own. A bed in the four-bed dormitory is F$20 per person.

Yau Kolo's cafe serves a variety of tasty, budget-priced dishes (self-catering facilities are not provided). The garden setting is nice with fine lagoon views, and there's a natural swimming hole with cascades a five-minute hike up the creek. Activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, fishing, and hiking are offered, and scuba diving can be arranged.

The bus fare from Savusavu to Yau Kolo is F$1.35, or F$12 by taxi. From Taveuni, take the ferry Raja to Natuvu, then a connecting bus to the campground. You can call the managers Louise Ianna and Jim Larsen at tel. 885-3089 to check availability, or email yaukolo@yahoo.com.
