Chiang Mai Get Together

Three of the princes of world travel have met in the Thai city of Chiang Mai, as fellow Moon Handbooks author Joshua Berman reports on his Tranquilo Traveler blog. The name Joe Cummings will be familiar to anyone who has traveled in Southeast Asia as Joe has written definitive guides to many parts of the region. (Joe currently lives and works in Chiang Mai, and shows his buddy Mick Jagger around town whenever he's in the area).

I've known Bill Weir for over 20 years, ever since the time when Bill was camping out in Moon Publication's Chico warehouse. In 1989 the company changed hands, and Bill and I were banned from the premises outside office hours “for insurance reasons.” Last year Bill and Avalon Travel Publishing (Moon's successor company) finally parted ways, and the next edition of his classic Arizona Handbook will be published elsewhere. Meanwhile Bill is bicyling through Asia – say hello from me if you see him.

I'm now back at my base on Vancouver Island, Canada, after a rewarding month in the Middle East. The Gulf States have been on my “to do” list for many years, and it was satisfying to finally get to them. My trip is the reason I haven't been posting regularly on this blog, but now that I'm home, I'll try to pick up where I left off in January. If there's any South Pacific travel news you think I should be covering here, feel free to use the “Contact Me” button on the righthand side of this page to let me know.
