Air Fiji to Ono-i-Lau

Air Fiji is expected to begin a monthly service to Ono-i-Lau Island in Fiji's remote Southern Lau Group later this year. The airline stopped offering scheduled flights to Ono-i-Lau two decades ago, but Airports Fiji Limited has maintained the runway for emergency purposes ever since.

Air Fiji currently operates uneconomic routes to islands like Koro, Gau, Vanua Balavu, Lakeba, Moala, and Cicia thanks to government subsidies of F$370,000 a year. Shipping services are also subsidized, though the boat from Suva can take three days while the plane ride is only about an hour. Without these services, life would be extremely difficult on Fiji's scattered eastern islands.

UPDATE: Air Fiji has ceased operations and some of their routes have been taken over by Pacific Sun.
