Kings Road, Viti Levu

The Fiji Government has canceled the contract of the China National Overseas Engineering Corporation to upgrade and pave Kings Road west of Korovou on Viti Levu. Work on an unpaved 50-kilometer stretch of road between Korovou and Dama has been dragging on for many years. The Chinese company began work on the four-year project in 2001, but only about a third of the work had been finished by the contracted deadline last year. The government has now called for new tenders to complete the project, hopefully by 2008.

Currently, the unpaved gravel stretch of Kings Road in Tailevu can be rough, but it's easily passable in any car. Bus and rent-a-car travelers between Nadi and Suva have a choice of Queens Road via Sigatoka or Kings Road via Rakiraki. I've always preferred Kings Road over Queens Road as the scenery along the way is more varied and you get to see the island's interior. On a circle island trip, I suggest doing Kings Road first, then heading back to Nadi along smoother and faster Queens Road, with a stop at one of the Coral Coast resorts along the way.
