Samoa South Pacific Games

South Pacific GamesNext year Samoa will host the 13th South Pacific Games. Every four years since 1963 this major sporting event has taken place in a different Pacific country. The purpose of the games is to promote regional solidarity and to encourage amateur sports. In 2007, some 4,000 athletes from 22 countries will gather in Samoa to compete in athletics, basketball, soccer, swimming, tennis, and several dozen other events. Virtually any sport can be included in the program if at least six countries request it.

The gymnasium at Apia Part in Samoa's capital was constructed by the People's Republic of China in 1983 for the 7th South Pacific Games. Visitors to Apia today can see basketball, badminton, and volleyball matches in the gym several nights a week. Apia Park's grandstand is the venue for Saturday afternoon rugby or soccer matches in season, and just beyond are Apia's public tennis courts. New venues such as the Samoa Aquatic Center are being prepared for the 13th games. If you're an avid sports fan, there will be no better time for you to visit Samoa than from August 24 to September 8, 2007. But book your flights six months in advance.
