Smugglers Cove Beach Resort, Fiji

Wailoaloa BeachSmugglers Cove Beach Resort will open next month on Nadi's Wailoaloa Beach, the latest in a growing number of Fiji beach resorts targeting yuppie backpackers. The 20 hotel rooms at Smugglers Cove start at F$55/75 single/double, while an air-conditioned dormitory is available at F$24 per bed. Airport transfers, breakfast, and tax are included in these rates, but communal cooking facilities are not provided.

Smugglers Cove is owned by the same folks as neighboring (and cheaper) Horizon Beach Resort. Just up the beach, Aquarius Resort Fiji caters to the same clientele. People on Feejee Experience bus tours are often dropped off at these places, bringing a certain party atmosphere along with them.

Wailoaloa Beach is to young budget travelers what Denarau Island is to older packaged tourists. At both, the offshore waters are murky with no coral, and the beaches themselves are nothing compared to the sparkling white sands of the Mamanuca Islands just west. Wailoaloa is conveniently located next the runways of Nadi International Airport, but the Coral Coast resorts have better beaches and more Fijian atmosphere than any of the tourist ghettos of Nadi.
