Vanuatu Marlin Classic

Vanuatu Marlin ClassicVanuatu's largest sporting event, the Vanuatu Marlin Classic, will be held at Port Vila from June 2nd to June 8th this year. The deadline for entries is April 18th, with a registration fee of $1,500 Australian covering up to four anglers (late entries $2,000). Participants may fish on any three of the seven competition days, although the exact dates must be specified upon registering (late entries will not be able to chose). The Vanuatu Marlin Classic is a Rolex/IGFA Offshore Championship qualifying event, which means that the 2006 winning team will be invited to compete in the 2007 Rolex/IGFA Offshore Championship Tournament.

Each boat is required to provide a qualified observer to the pool every morning. The prize money to be awarded totals $60,000 Australian: The first team to capture a 1,000 pound marlin will reel in a new Toyota Hilux. The Vanuatu Marlin Classic promotes tag and release fishing. and healthy marlin are released back into the wild. The Classic's website provides a list of local charter boats which can be hired for the competition.
