Micronesian Games 2006

From June 23rd to July 2nd, 2006, the 6th Micronesian Games will be held on Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands. The 1st games were also held on Saipan in 1969, then there was a lapse until 1990 when Saipan again hosted the games. The 1994 games were on Guam, the 1998 games on Koror, and the 2002 games on Pohnpei, all in Micronesia.

The Micronesian Games are the Olympics of the North Pacific. Teams from all countries in the region compete in familiar sports like basketball and swimming, but there are also unconventional coconut throwing, coconut tree climbing, and spearfishing events. There will also be special competitions for physically challenged athletes. These games are being financed by private sponsors after the Northern Marianas government refused to contribute any money.
