2007 Easter Island Conference

VII International Conference on Easter IslandGotland University and the Easter Island Foundation are organizing the VII International Conference on Easter Island and the Pacific Islands at Visby on Gotland Island, Sweden, from 20-25 August 2007. John Flenley of Massey University in New Zealand will give the keynote lecture, “A palynologist looks at the colonization of the Pacific.” Tupua Tamasese, the Deputy Head of State of Samoa, will also speak. Session chairs include Grant McCall of the University of New South Wales, Australia, Patrick Kirch of the University of California, Berkeley, Jose Miguel Ramirez Aliaga of the Universidad de Valparaiso, rongorongo expert Dr. Steven R. Fischer from New Zealand, and Edmundo Edwards of Rapa Nui, Chile.

I'm considering attending this conference as it could tie into visits to Belarus and Kaliningrad, virgin territory for me. There are ferries from Gdansk to Visby and it would be a lot of fun to return to Poland after an absence of 13 years. Aside from the presentations at the conference itself, many interesting activities have been arranged, including a full-day excursion around Gotland Island, one-hour tours of medieval Visby, and a three-day post-conference bus tour from Visby to Stockholm via Oslo.
