Vanuatu Feedback

Tamanu of the BeachA reader of my South Pacific Handbook, Dan Gordon, has sent me some feedback on his recent trip to Vanuatu, including this report on Tamanu on the Beach (pictured here) on the south side of Efate Island:

"Tamanu on the Beach, right across the road from the White Sands Country Club (now closed), is a wonderful place to stay. The rooms are large, the bungalows right on the beach, with coral walls, tastefully decorated, and very private. The rate was 12,000 vatu per night and that includes a full breakfast. They leave out a fruit bowl with free fruit that was enough for lunch every day. It is cheaper to rent a car than to take a taxi there. The car rental outfits will give you a free night at Beachcombers Resort on north Efate if you rent for three days, but you have to ask. I wouldn't recommend Beachcombers as they are under construction and "a little dodgy" as the Aussies say. If you turn down the night at Beachcombers, you can get a 10 percent discount on the car. Tamanu has one of - if not the best - restaurants on the island."

Dan sent these additional comments: "We also spent a couple of nights at Ocean Shores on Devils Point Road in Efate. They only have two bungalows, right on the beach, a nice pool, and very friendly and helpful hosts, Tony and Chiria. They charged us 9,000 vatu a night including an ample breakfast. On Espirtu Santo we stayed at Deco Stop. The owner Cathy will take really good care of you, and the cook Rosie is wonderful. She will cook anything you want: Just tell her how you want it cooked and she will do it. On Tanna we stayed at Friendly Bungalows. The bed was like a salad bowl, but the rest of it was fine. I understand the Aussie owner is in the process of making some improvements. Vanuatu was our best trip yet - we were there for five weeks."
