Fiji Beachouse to Reopen

The Beachouse on Fiji's Coral Coast will reopen on October 1, 2006, after being closed for several months as the British reality TV series Celebrity Love Island was filming there. The producers left behind a Fiji-style thatched movie set and swimming pool beside the beach for future Beachouse guests to enjoy. Rates at The Beachouse start at $25 Fijian per person in an eight-bed dorm, or $77 Fijian single or double for rooms in a quadrangle at the center of the property. The beach here is good and there are many activities for travelers. All the Queens Road buses stop at their gate.

In 2005 Celebrity Love Island was shot at Bounty Island Sanctuary Resort on a small island in the Mamanuca Group off Nadi. Dorm beds here are $89 Fijian per person including all meals. Hot tip: You can get a nice discount on your stay at Bounty Island by visiting the resort office on Marine Drive, Lautoka, and asking for the last minute special. The same office also has discounts for more upscale Treasure Island Resort.

In other news, I'm sorry to have to report that an old favorite, Jona's Paradise Resort on Ono Island near Kadavu, has closed. Domestic difficulties seem to have been the cause, and I'm waiting to hear from the new owners about their plans. Meanwhile, the only place to stay on Ono is currently the lovely Koro Makawa Resort where the one cottage rents for $685 Fijian double plus tax including meals.
