Flashpacker Resorts, Nadi, Fiji

Mama SelenaThe selection of flashpacker resorts around Nadi, Fiji, is soon to get better. An extension to the popular Tropic of Capricorn Resort on Nadi's Wailoaloa Beach is nearing completion and should be ready by December. The new beachfront block will have several rooms divided into three-bed dormitories priced $22 to $26 Fijian, breakfast included. The Tropic of Capricorn is managed by Mama Selena (pictured here), a veteran world traveler and a fun person to meet.

The number of flashpacker resorts around Nadi is growing fast. Right next to the Tropic of Capricorn is Smugglers Cove Beach Resort, the current cool place to stay for young business class backpackers. It's a lot less pretentious than the large resorts of Denarau Island at a quarter of the price. Lounging next to the pool at Smugglers Cove, you get an experience comparable to what tourists staying at the Sheraton, Sofitel, and Hilton pay big bucks to enjoy. There's a snazzy swimming pool, restaurant, bar, and internet cafe, plus a choice of oceanview suites and 32-bed dormitories.

Much the same can be said about Aquarius Fiji Resort, just down the beach from Smugglers Cove. Rooms at Aquarius are priced anywhere from $85 to $95 Fijian, and dorm beds go for as little as $28. The swimming pool by the beach is very nice indeed. Flashpackers waiting to be picked up by their Feejee Experience or Awesome Adventures tour buses often stay at the Nadi Bay Resort Hotel or Nomads Skylodge Hotel, up near Queens Road on the way back to the airport. Budget travel was never easier.
