Marriott Fiji Resort and Spa

The JW Marriott Fiji Resort & Spa is currently under construction at Momi Bay, 29 kilometers southwest of Nadi, Fiji. The 250-room Marriott Fiji is scheduled to open in May, 2007, with an underground nightclub, lavish pools, and an 18-hole golf course. The 22 overwater bungalows of the French Polynesian type will be the first of their kind in Fiji. Bayleys Real Estate Fiji Ltd. is currently marketing the 300 freehold residential sites included in the project.

I imagine Marriott will be spending a lot of money on sand barged in from remote locations as the beaches of Momi Bay are as poor as those around Nadi, if not poorer. Before pre-booking your two-bedroom villa at the Marriott Fiji, I suggest you consider the new Inter-Continental Hotel currently under construction on the far superior sands of Natadola Beach a bit south.

And frankly, if you're smitten with Momi Bay, I'm prepared to disclose to you that you'll pay way less at Seashell Cove Resort right adjacent to the Marriott construction site. Seashell Cove offers a wide range of accommodations, from five-bed backpacker dormitories at F$65 per person including all meals to honeymoon suites at F$228. Seashell Cove has an active scuba diving operation, and on Saturdays they take their guests surfing on the famous Cloudbreak wave for a tiny fraction of what the Tavarua guys have to pay. It's all in Moon Handbooks Fiji.

UPDATE: The JW Marriot Fiji Resort project collapsed unfinished.
