Fiji and Tahiti Now Available

Fiji and Tahiti HandbooksThe 8th edition of Moon Fiji and the 6th edition of Moon Tahiti are now in the bookstores. Both books have been completely redesigned in Avalon Travel Publishing's new house style. Much of the introductory material was moved to Background and Essentials chapters in the backmatter and a new “blue section” was added to the frontmatter.

Color photos, maps, and a five-page keynote essay open each book. “The Lay of the Land” introduces the various regions with thumbnail location maps, while “Planning Your Trip” gives advice on when to go and what to take. “Explore” offers four or five day-by-day itineraries. The blue sections close with details of scuba diving, snorkeling, surfing, and other aquatic activities. In Essentials there are new “Tips for Travelers” sections with information for those with special needs.

The internet and email addresses have been embedded in the actual listings for ease of reference. Must See and Top Pick highlights are now coded on the maps and in the text. Moon Fiji has a new map of Denarau Island, while Moon Tahiti has new maps of Fakarava, Tikehau, Hauru, and Hakahau. All of the travel information has been thoroughly updated with newly-built hotels and resorts added to the coverage. In Moon Fiji, details of the December 2006 coup were added.

As is the rule with Moon Handbooks, each title has a detailed index, bibliography, glossary, and vocabulary, and dozens of new photos are scattered throughout. Considering the high cost of a trip to the South Pacific, the book's prices are low at US$19.95 and the savvy Pacific traveler will want to place an order.

UPDATE: New editions of Moon Fiji and Moon Tahiti were published by Avalon Travel in 2011. For more information, visit South Pacific Travel.
