Royal Sunset Island Resort

Royal Sunset Island ResortThe Royal Sunset Island Resort, on Atata Island 11 km northwest of Nukualofa, is the most remote of the small island hotels off Tongatapu. The entire island is owned by the King of Tonga's younger brother, Crown Prince Tupouto'a, and is allocated to his youngest son Prince Ata. All of Royal Sunset's local employees are from the friendly, 233-person Tongan village on the island. The resort is surrounded by a broad white-sand beach.

The 16 "Western" bungalows start at T$308 single or double, while the eight "Eastern" bungalows start at T$208.00. The optional meal plans are T$92 per person for full board or T$80.50 for breakfast and dinner only. There's a swimming pool, and free activities for guests include tennis, kayaking, waterskiing, kneeboarding, windsurfing, and snorkeling boat trips. Scuba diving and deep-sea fishing are available at additional cost.

Transfers from Nukualofa on the Lady Atata or Livaliva are T$36.80 per person roundtrip, a 15-minute ride each way. Ask about Sunday daytrips to Royal Sunset Resort, which are a great thing to do on a sleepy Nuku'alofa Sunday. You must book these trips at least a day ahead through a local travel agent or by calling the resort directly at 21-254 or 24-923.
