Pillaging Continues in Solomons

The Solomon Star is reporting that an Asian vessel is currently cruising the Solomon Islands collecting World War Two relics for scrap metal. A local businessman said he had seen machine guns and other items being loaded on the ship. The pillaging of valuable historic relics for scrap seems to be going on with the tacit approval of Solomon Islands government officials.

In December I posted a story on this blog about American war historian Justin Taylan and three companions who were placed under “boat arrest” and charged with immigration offenses at Gizo after blowing the whistle on an illegal aircraft salvage operation they had stumbled upon on Ballalae Island in the Shortlands Group. Although Taylan and the others were eventually fined and released, no action has been taken against the well connected Ballalae robbers as far as I know.
