Moorea Golf Resort

The construction of two large resort hotels will begin soon next to the new Moorea Green Pearl Golf Course near Temae Airport on Moorea. Warwick International is to build a five-star, 150-room hotel, while a 130-room residential hotel is planned by local investors. Until the opening of the Moorea course, the International Golf Course Olivier Breaud on the south side of Tahiti was French Polynesia's only competition golf course.

Golf course and associated resort development is a controversial issue in French Polynesia. The environmental impact of golf courses on small tropical islands can be huge, and land and water scarcities have thus far prevented the creation of golf courses on Bora Bora and other islands. A 1991 attempt to construct an 18-hole golf course and Sheraton resort on territorial land in Moorea's Opunohu Vally was defeated by referendum voters.
