Air Pacific to Funafuti

Air Pacific has obtained the rights to fly between Fiji and Funafiti, Tuvalu. Since Air Marshall Islands stopped flying to Funafuti a decade ago, Tuvalu Government-owned Air Fiji has enjoyed a monopoly on air services into Tuvalu. This has led to extremely high airfares ($1,300 Fijian roundtrip from Suva), effectively striking Tuvalu off most peoples travel itinerary. Air Pacific hasn't yet said what fares they will be charging but they're quite likely to be lower than those of Air Fiji. Air Pacific already flies to Tarawa, Republic of Kiribati, and if they can reestablish Air Marshall Island's old Nadi Funafuti Tarawa Majuro route, both travelers and local residents will benefit greatly.

UPDATE: Air Pacific's weekly service from Fiji to Funafuti will begin operating on July 24, 2008, with a second weekly service added on August 21, 2008. Air Pacific will use a 44-passenger ATR 42 aircraft on this route.
