Flights to Solomon Islands

It used to be that Solomon Airlines was the only show in town but more airlines are now flying to Honiara. For several years Our Airline, formerly Air Nauru, has been calling at Honiara twice a week between Brisbane and Nauru. Air Niugini arrives in Honiara from Port Moresby, and Air Pacific just announced a twice weekly service from Nadi. The new kid on the block is SkyAirWorld, an Australian company which recently began flying a 94-seat Embraer jet between Brisbane and Honiara five times a week.

SkyAirWorld has hopes to fly directly to Munda, eliminating the need for Australian anglers and divers to transit dusty Honiara on their way to the Western Solomons. Over the years, various airlines have announced direct services from Australia to Gizo and Munda but nothing has ever come of them. Munda has a vast airfield built by the Japanese during World War Two, but the Solomon Islands Government will have to spend a tidy sum on upgrading before it can handle jet flights from Australia. I'll believe in SkyAirWorld flights to Munda when I see them.
