Flights to Vavau Tonga

Julianne Bell of Outriggers in Paradise reports from Vavau that Chathams Pacific will be launching domestic flights around the Tongan islands on April 14, 2008. The airline will be using a Convair 50-seater between Tongatapu, Haapai, and Vavau. Service to Eua and the Niuas is scheduled to begin in May, 2008, when their Islander aircraft arrives. This will be a boon to Tongans and travelers alike as domestic flights within Tonga have always been inadequate and unreliable.

The bad news is that Air Fiji has stopped their direct Nadi-Vavau flight. Hopefully another airline like Pacific Blue will recognize the opportunity and pick up that route. Air Fiji's Tongan domestic operation, Airlines Tonga, is still in business and their existing services will be competing with those of Chathams Pacific. A third Tongan domestic airline, Peau Vava'u, stopped operating after their offices were sacked during the 2006 rioting.
