Frigates Reef Resort Yanuca

Frigates Reef ResortYanuca Island south of Viti Levu, Fiji, offers visitors gorgeous beaches, spectacular snorkeling, and world class surfing and diving. Rather than the exclusive (and expensive) resorts you'll find on nearby Beqa and Vatulele islands, Yanuca features a couple of small backpacker camps which provide sports people and slightly adventurous tourists with basic comforts at reasonable prices. Pictured here is the lunch buffet at Frigates Reef Resort, also known as Yanuca Island Resort (photo courtesy of Ron Smith). This resort is run by the local Fijian islanders themselves, which means there's always a friendly welcome.

Most Yanuca visitors arrive from Pacific Harbour on Viti Levu and island stays are easily arranged through the travel agencies at the Arts Village. There are also several scuba operators at Pacific Harbour which frequent dive sites just off the island. Shark diving is a specialty. But Yanuca's greatest claim to fame is Frigates Passage with some of the South Pacific's finest surfing. Both backpacker camps on Yanuca arrange surf transfers daily except Sunday.
