Swiss artist Judith Kunzle just sent me information on two interesting outer island art galleries in the Cook Islands. The Koru Cafe and Gallery on the way to Ootu beach on Aitutaki Island displays local paintings, prints, and crafts. Artists such as David Nicholls from Aitutaki and Jeanne Humphreys from Atiu are represented here. The crafts include handmade pareu (sarongs), ukuleles, pearl jewelry, shell jewelry, glass work, weaving, and carvings, all made on Aitutaki. The Koru Cafe and Gallery (tel. 31110) is open every day from 7 am to 3 pm.
The Atiu Fibre Arts Studio on Atiu Island specializes in textile art, tivaivai, designer clothing, textile installations, and jewelery. Works by gallery owner Andrea Eimke are featured and Andrea offers tivaivai workshops for visitors. The Atiu Fibre Arts Studio (tel. 33031) is open by appointment or Monday to Friday 9 am to 3 pm, and Saturday 9 am to 1 pm. See also Judith Kunzle’s reviews of Rarotonga Art Galleries.
