Rarotonga Art Galleries

Judith Kunzle, a Swiss painter living on Rarotonga in the Cook Islands, recently sent me an update on the art galleries of Avarua. Smaller galleries are always coming and going, but a few have become almost permanent institutions. Moana Gems Pearl and Art Gallery has stores in the CITC Shopping Centre and at the east end of Avarua showing the works of Judith Kunzle and Glen Miller. The Art Studio Gallery at Arorangi on the west coast of Rarotonga has four exhibitions a year. It shows works of local artists, Cook Islands artists overseas, and Pacific artists. Ian and Kay George, David Teata, Loretta Reynolds, Krick Barraud, Ani O’Neil, Mahiriki Tangaroa, Joan Rolls-Gragg, and Sylvia Masters are all represented here. The Beachcomber Contemporary Art Gallery on the east side of Avarua represents Apii Rongo, Tim Buchanan, Varu Samuel, and others. Aside from these established galleries, there’s an Art Society stand at the market and a small art shop next to the Banana Court. The longstanding Kenwall Gallery has closed.
