The Samoas consist of former Western Samoa, independent since 1962, and American Samoa, a United States territory since 1900. Our map of Samoa shows the 100-km strait between Upolu and Tutuila, with Savaii (the largest island in Polynesia) to the west and the idyllic Manua Group to the east.
